In October 1888, while constructing the Metropolitan Police headquarters, later known as Scotland Yard, human remains were discovered near Whitehall. Earlier in September, a severed arm was found along the Thames. A murderer was dismembering a woman and spreading her remains around Whitehall, creating the unsolved Whitehall Mystery.
