In War of the Ring, one player controls the Free Peoples while the other commands the Shadow Armies. Initially reluctant to confront Sauron, the Free Peoples must be persuaded to fight, represented by the Political Track. Victory can be achieved through military conquest or the Ringbearer's quest to destroy the One Ring, which is fraught with danger from Saurons forces. Action Dice drive the game's turn structure, enabling various actions like moving armies or playing Event Cards, which introduce unique twists to the gameplay.
